2 Postal Shoes for Letter Carriers in any Situation

As any veteran letter carrier will likely tell you your usps postal uniform approved shoes are without a doubt the most important part of your uniform.  No other item directly impacts your comfort day in and day out. While we all know that some offices don’t require compliance when it comes to usps approved shoes, many postmasters insist on uniform compliance including shoes.

We spoke with 1,000’s of our customers to provide you with insight into the best postal shoes for good weather and bad.

Best Postal Uniforms Store

Depending on where you are in your career you’ll may be able to splurge on shoes for more specialized use such as indoor letter carrier walking shoes, gortex rain boots, or winter outer boot/shoe protectors.

Through our retail postal uniforms store we talk daily with letter carriers who experience all four Midwest seasons and certainly have some great opinions on the best postal approved footwear available in the marketplace.

Every Day Letter Carrier Postal Shoes:  For everyday comfort we recommend our number one selling shoe, the Rocky 5000 Duty TMC. This shoe has the thickest insole of any postal shoe we have ever seen, which means all day long comfort.

Winter/Cold Weather Waterproof Boots: As a letter carrier or a CCA , if you’re considering a pair of waterproof boots this year, we know this is a large decision as it impacts a good amount of your uniform allowance.

Keeping in this mind we really beat the streets hard in making a great recommendation on the most well reviewed cold weather boot from actual letter carriers and CCA’s.

These neo’s hit the market strong and we’ve been hearing a lot about these in a very short period of time. As overshoes you need to remember that you’ll still wear a sneaker or a boot under these which many seem to approve of. Keep an eye out this year and you’ll see plenty of these out on the street.

4 Choices Postal Jackets - Postal Uniform Outerwear

Outerwear is a big consideration when it comes to your postal uniform allowance. We know that many new usps postal employees simply can’t afford their allowance dollars for some of the big ticket outerwear items, however the bottom line is that if you work in a cold climate, you’ll need at least one good piece of postal uniform outerwear.  We break down your choices and let you know what our customers have told us over the years.

Buying Postal Uniforms Online

Most important, for all practical purposes most letter carriers and MVS folks really have four options for postal uniform outerwear. Also, two of the three options actually act as liners and can zip into the gortex jacket/liner which is the creme dela creme of postal outerwear. Here are your four most basic outerwear choices:

Lightest Weight Option: Medium Weight Fleece Jacket:

This jacket is very similar to made by North Face or Patagonia. For those of you in areas of the country that experience bitter cold temperatures, this probably ISN’T your best option for your first piece of postal uniform outerwear, however, this is a great jacket for protection and warmth down to about 30 degrees or so. Also, this is a great option to build your way into the Parka liner which we will talk about in a moment.

Heavier Weight Option: Heavy Weight Jacket -

This jacket should be thought of to be similar to a duck coat, with a fleece collar. If you have no usps postal uniform outerwear today, and you have some uniform allowance dollars to spend, this is most likely the jacket you want to go with. It is the most versatile of four of the postal uniform jackets. It can take you from fall all the way through winter with appropriate layering.  Best of all, when you are ready this jacket will also zip into the gortex jacket/liner which will provide you with the absolute warmest available us postal uniform option.

Heaviest Weight Option: Insulated Parka

Think of this jacket as George Costanza’s puffy coat! You’ll certainly be warm and toasty in this jacket, but this isn’t the best option for your first usps postal uniform outerwear.  While we like the warmth of this jacket we really like the three other options as they work together and act as liners.  So unless this happens to fit into you allowance budget, or you just have to have a parka this year, we are bigger fans of going with option 1, or option 2, then incorporating the next jacket.

The Gold Standard: Waterproof Breathable Parka Shell

This jacket is made of the highest quality. We believe this is the gold standard when it comes to US Postal Uniforms Outerwear. With proper layering this can be worn year round, however due to cost, this is usually a piece that is purchased later on in careers.  This jacket blocks wind, and water. Best of all, the first two options we wrote about zip into this jacket and act as liners! It’s this versatility that make this a must have postal uniform piece, along with one of the first two options depending on your climate.

3 Tips For Getting the Best Fitting Postal Uniform

As we all take a break and celebrate the greatest country on Earth, I got to thinking about some of the greatest people serving this country. Thats right... The great men and women of the United States Postal Service! While I love meeting so many USPS employees in our store, I'm always amazed at the number of folks who really don't know what size to buy when it comes to postal uniforms.

Buying Postal Uniforms Online

I'm going to write this piece specifically for letter carriers today because these are the folks who I see most often.

Now most of the people I meet every day don't exactly look like this nice lady. If they did then finding the best size and cut would be as easy as size 0, and extra small please.

For the rest of us, myself included, we really need to look at the options available to us and make the best decisions with whats actually available.

1. Women's Biggest Mistakes: My staff would say that most of the women who shop with us are way too focused on getting into a specific size that they "think" they should be wearing. Ladies you need to remember that this is government sizing at its finest. If you are usually a 12, you should expect to be a 14 or even a 16. If you're a plus size person, we find that many of our female letter carriers LOVE the unisex pants, and shorts made with the elastic waistband.  TIP: Forget about your normal size. Go a size or two larger, and consider our unisex line. Remember that you'll be wearing these items all day, every day!

2. Men's Biggest Mistakes:  Where to begin? A good looking uniform starts with the correct fit.

Where most women tend to pick sizes that are too small, most men pick sizes that are much too big. This is your postal uniforms, not postal sweatsuit.  When you select a pair of pants that are two sizes too big they hang too low and you look sloppy! Make sure your pants actually fit, and please let us hem the pants for you. These simple fixes will have you looking 100% better instantly.

3. Undershirts:  Nothing looks worse than a beat up old under shirt.  We plan to add some very affordable moisture whicking undershirts to our bundles in the future.

5 Things to consider when buying Postal Uniforms

Postal Uniforms USA has been a licensed postal uniforms vendor for over 30 years. Over this period of time we’ve seen a lot of changes in our industry, and we’ve certainly seen the amount of Postal Uniform vendors dwindle. As of today there are less than 160 licensed postal uniform vendors active in the country. So what should you look for when trying to decide where to spend your postal uniform allowance? Here are some critical things you need to be aware of:

1.  Who is the manufacturer? Looking at postal uniform posts on various postal forums, many letter carriers, retail clerks or CCA’s will often times complain about uniform quality. These posts often times make me wonder why nobody ever talks about who’s uniforms they are actually wearing. While manufactures are required to produce postal shirts, jackets and pants to an identical look, some manufactures have different quality controls that get them to their finished product.

Look for high quality union made apparel. We only purchase from Union Line, and Elbeco. These two lines are produced in union shops, by unionized labor, and their Postal Uniforms are of the highest quality. So look at your current manufacturer, if you’re unhappy with the quality you probably aren’t wearing union made apparel.

2.  Postal Uniform pants, know your options. Now that your looking at who actually makes your postal uniform, you should be aware of options especially when it comes to pants. Working with postal employees for 30 years I can tell you that not everyone fit into standard issue postal uniform pants with ease. If you’re having trouble getting a good fit, you should know that the USPS offers a flex-fit option. The new Union Line and Elbeco pants offer a tremendous amount of comfort when compared to the traditional postal uniform pants. Just like a comfortable pair of pants or shorts you’d wear at home, many of our customers have found a tremendous amount of comfort in switching to the flex-fit pants.

3.  Know your Online Postal Uniform vendors return policy: Before you buy make sure you review the stores policy for returns. Many online postal uniform stores do not pay for return shipping. At Postal Uniforms USA, we always stand behind our shipments by offering free shipping on all returns.

4.  Who actually owns the postal uniform store your buying from? The internet can be a great place to help union made apparel shops succeed, however it can also provide “cover” for large companies pretending to be mom and pops. Did you know that Galls uniform operates 8+ postal uniform sites under different names?

We’ve only been selling online for six months, after 30 years of selling exclusively in our store. We were amazed to find that the first page of google is dominated by Galls, who has hidden the fact that they own every “store” on the first page of google. Look at the postal uniform vendor number on any website. You should know who you’re REALLY buying from.

5.  Read Reviews – Just like anything else you purchase online, you MUST read reviews. Try Google Plus, BBB, Yelp, and Facebook for reviews prior to purchasing.
